Vinification: Grapes were naturally fermented – 40% whole bunch and 60% destemmed. Punched down once a day during fermentation. Tannat has naturally strong tannins. By handling grapes gently and minimally, we ensure soft, rounded tannin expression with focus on the marvellous fruit. After fermentation, grapes are pressed lightly and put in French oak the next day. Aged for 10 months in older oak ensures that the fruit stays intact and tannins aren’t dried out. Minimal SO2 was added before bottling in October 2019.
Tasting notes: Perfume character with the red and black berry aromas, followed by spicy notes that follows through to the palate with well balanced tannins – unexpected in a young Tannat. Black fruit followed by tobacco leaf on mid-palate. This vintage shows great tension; complex flavours supported by a freshness singular to the Prieska terroir.
